Model Feature: Monisha - Criminologist, with a side of glam!
It was a pleasure to interview local Canberra model Monisha - who has had over a decade of experience in the industry. Monisha has worked across runway, beauty, fashion and commercial roles. She currently holds dual international pageant titles (Miss M Universe International/Miss M Universe Culture 2024), and is passionate about using her platform to empower others. She was also on the cover of the May 2025 issue of StarCentral Magazine.
Outside of modelling, Monisha is a criminologist and entrepreneur, and the founder of StoryCloud, an educational technology company creating inclusive, values-driven storytelling for children. She’s deeply committed to diversity, inclusion and community and brings a calm, confidence-building energy to every event she leads.
Monisha is a bright, bubbly and energetic person. I am intrigued and inspired by her ability to use modelling both as a creative outlet, and as an advocate for deeper causes and how this is juxtaposed by her day job as a criminologist! It was a pleasure to speak to her, and also have the opportunity to work closely with her via Devojka Models & Talent.
Meet Monisha
Model, Criminologist, Entrepeneur.
1. Who are you signed with, and why do you prefer being with an agent or multiple agents?
I’m currently represented by Devojka in Canberra and Freelance House in Sydney. I prefer working with boutique agencies that are local to where I live, as it allows for a more personal connection, especially with Tina from Devojka, who’s been incredible. Being under a non-exclusive agreement with Freelance House gives me the flexibility to take on work in other regions, something that works well alongside my commitments as a criminologist and founder, and lets me take on modelling opportunities that align with my availability.
2. How important is it to have a professional portfolio in the industry and what is it used for?
A professional portfolio is essential – it showcases your previous work, your skill level, and gives clients a clear sense of your “look” so they can visualise you in the role. It’s often the first impression you make, so having a strong, well-curated portfolio really matters.
3. What was your first modelling gig?
My first runway show was back in 2016 for Khadi by Sunaina Suneja, a traditional Indian textile brand, at the Indian Australian Business & Community Awards (IABC Awards). I was incredibly nervous, and I’m still very anxious before runway shows, to be honest! There’s always a bit of chaos backstage with quick changes and last-minute tweaks, but once you step onto the runway, it all comes together. That energy is unforgettable.
4. What has been your absolute favourite gig and why?
One of my favourites was a commercial for Destination NSW, where we spent five days in the Hunter Valley. I was cast as someone’s partner, and was also part of a friend group, and it was just so much fun! We rode golf buggies, travelled in a horse-drawn carriage, visited all the special places within that region, enjoyed amazing food and wine, and even prepped for a hot air balloon ride. A lot of us still stay in touch, and it honestly felt more like a holiday than work!
5. What are three things you ALWAYS bring to shoots?
I never go to a shoot without:
- My handheld steamer (wrinkle-free clothes on set are a must),
- My makeup kit (for touch ups/shade-matching issues), and
- A small emergency kit – fashion tape, adhesive bra, glue, needle and thread, and other bits and pieces that might come in handy for me or someone else on set.
